Title

Hatch’s Department Store (West Palm Beach, FL)

Description

Bernard Henry Kroger, an American businessman who created the Kroger chain of supermarkets, commissioned Volk to renovate an existing Beaux Art structure into something more innovative and progressive. Volk transformed the building into the Art Moderne style by stripping away ornamentation and creating a sleek modern façade. Volk also designed a home for Kroger on South Ocean Boulevard. It was featured in the 1937 edition of American Architect and Architecture and was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
